Kigali
You can be here in January for about €2,130, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Prime time in January: 27°C days.
The two dry seasons make the gorilla trek shorter and less muddy, and the long rains can turn a two-hour hike into five. Gorilla permits are capped daily and sell out well ahead, so the permit date, not the weather, sets the itinerary.
Best months here: February, June, July. January is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Kigali is orderly to the point of surprise: clean pavements, motorbike taxis with spare helmets, a plastic-bag ban enforced at the airport. It is a hilly, mid-sized capital with an unavoidable history and a coffee culture, and for most visitors it is the starting point for the gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, a three-hour drive away.
What you can do
- 01Spend a morning at the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi; allow time afterwards.
- 02Trek to a gorilla family in Volcanoes National Park; permits are limited to eight people per group.
- 03Walk Nyamirambo with the women's centre's neighbourhood tour, then eat brochettes with plantain.
- 04Drink Rwandan coffee at a roastery in Kiyovu, then see contemporary art at Inema.
- 05Take a boat on Lake Kivu from Gisenyi or Kibuye and stay a night on the shore.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Kiyovu or Kimihurura for a first visit, close to cafés and restaurants; for the gorillas sleep near Kinigi the night before rather than driving from Kigali at 4am.
Unusual things
- ◦The Campaign Against Genocide Museum inside the Parliament building, where bullet marks remain on the facade.
- ◦Umuganda, the mandatory community-work morning on the last Saturday of the month, when the whole country closes until noon.
- ◦The Nyungwe canopy walkway in the southwest, a suspension bridge above rainforest with chimpanzees and colobus.
