Hamburg
You can be here in August for about €1,777, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Good time in August: 23°C days, peak fares.
Late spring and summer bring long evenings on the Alster and the Elbe beaches, and the harbour birthday in spring fills the waterfront with ships; autumn and winter are grey but the concert halls and museums are the point then. Sunday morning is when the fish market runs, from five until half past nine.
Best months here: May, June, September. August is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Hamburg is a Hanseatic port city built on water, with more bridges than Venice, a lake in the middle and a container harbour that still dominates the skyline. It is wealthy, reserved, red-brick and rainy, and its nightlife on the Reeperbahn is neither as sordid nor as reformed as advertised. It suits people who like harbours, concerts and a city that gets on with its own business.
What you can do
- 01Walk the Speicherstadt's warehouses and canals, then the HafenCity to the Elbphilharmonie's free plaza.
- 02Take the public harbour ferry 62 from Landungsbrücken to Finkenwerder and back, on an ordinary transport ticket.
- 03Go to the Fischmarkt on Sunday at dawn, or Altona's fish auction hall for the band after.
- 04Eat a Fischbrötchen at Brücke 10, then Franzbrötchen from a bakery on the way to the Alster.
- 05Visit the Kunsthalle for Caspar David Friedrich, then walk the Alster lake's outer loop, about 7 kilometres.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in St. Pauli or the Schanze for nights, Altona or Winterhude for calm; the streets around the Hauptbahnhof, St. Georg's Steindamm in particular, are convenient but rough.
Unusual things
- ◦The Miniatur Wunderland in the Speicherstadt, a model railway on an absurd scale; book a slot, adults love it more.
- ◦The Old Elbe Tunnel at Landungsbrücken, walked or cycled under the river for the view back from Steinwerder.
- ◦The Ohlsdorf cemetery, the largest rural cemetery in the world, with its own bus routes and rhododendrons.
