Why now

Good time in October: 19°C days, 22 rainy days.

The dry months are high season, when Machu Picchu entry tickets and Ollantaytambo trains sell out weeks in advance and the winter solstice festival fills the city. The rainy months are green and emptier, and the Inca Trail closes for a month of maintenance each year; the ruins themselves stay open.

Best months here: May, June, July. October is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Cusco is the old Inca capital at 3,400 metres, its Spanish churches sitting on Inca walls and its steep streets full of trekkers, weavers and touts. Machu Picchu is the reason most people come, but the Sacred Valley between the two is where the trip is actually good. It suits people who are willing to plan train and entry tickets months ahead and then walk slowly.

What you can do

  1. 01Walk from Plaza de Armas up Hatun Rumiyoc past the twelve-angled stone into the artisan streets of San Blas.
  2. 02See the Inca masonry of Qorikancha under the Dominican church, then Sacsayhuamán above the city late in the afternoon.
  3. 03Spend a day in the Sacred Valley: Pisac's terraces in the morning, the Ollantaytambo fortress towards evening.
  4. 04Take the early train from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu with a timed circuit ticket bought weeks ahead.
  5. 05Eat lunch at a picantería and try chicharrón in Saylla; drink coca tea and do nothing on the first afternoon.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

San BlasThe steep artisan quarter above the plaza, cafés and small hotels with views; every walk home is uphill.
CentroColonial courtyard hotels around Plaza de Armas; convenient, touristy, noisy on the plaza itself.
OllantaytamboA living Inca town with water channels in the streets and the station for Machu Picchu; sleep here the night before.
UrubambaThe Sacred Valley's main town at 2,870 metres, with garden hotels; the place to acclimatise before Cusco.

Start in the Sacred Valley at Urubamba or Ollantaytambo for two nights at lower altitude, then move up to Cusco and stay in San Blas or a courtyard hotel a street or two off the plaza. Aguas Calientes is for one night before a dawn entry only.

Unusual things

  • ◦Tipón, Inca agricultural terraces and working water channels 45 minutes southeast, almost empty most days.
  • ◦The church of Andahuaylillas, a plain village facade hiding a painted baroque interior on the road south.
  • ◦Museo Machu Picchu Casa Concha, holding the objects Hiram Bingham took to Yale and returned a century later.

Day trips

Machu PicchuTrain from Ollantaytambo about 1 hour 30 minutes, then bus 25 minutes; from Cusco it is a 16-hour day — Book the circuit ticket and the train before anything else; Huayna Picchu permits go first.
Moray and the Maras salt pansTaxi or tour, about 1 hour — Circular Inca terraces and hundreds of salt ponds worked by hand; add the weaving cooperatives of Chinchero.
VinicuncaCar about 3 hours each way, then a walk at over 5,000 metres — The striped mountain is real and crowded by mid-morning; only sensible once acclimatised, and Palccoyo is an easier alternative.

Good to know

Altitude sickness affects most people arriving directly at 3,400 metres; ascend gradually, avoid alcohol on the first day and ask a doctor about preventive medication before travelling.
