Why now

Good time in April: 19°C days.

Autumn is the time: the Kakheti grape harvest, the city festival, and cooler streets after a summer when many locals leave the heat. Spring brings tarragon-heavy dishes like chakapuli and green hills for the day trips; winter is short, grey and cheap, with skiing at Gudauri two hours away.

Best months here: June, September, October. April is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Tbilisi is a river city of carved wooden balconies, painted stairwells and sulphur steam, where a Persian-looking old town sits under a fortress and the nineteenth-century avenues above it still have Soviet bones. It suits people who eat and drink seriously and do not mind steps, cracked pavements or a supra that runs past midnight.

What you can do

  1. 01Book a private room at the Orbeliani baths in Abanotubani, sulphur water and a rough scrub included.
  2. 02Eat khinkali by hand, holding the knot, then order Adjaruli khachapuri and share it; no cutlery needed.
  3. 03Ride the cable car from Rike Park to Narikala fortress and walk down through the botanical garden.
  4. 04Browse the Dry Bridge market on a weekend morning: Soviet cameras, enamel pins, old carpets, mostly genuine.
  5. 05See the Colchian gold and the Soviet Occupation hall at the National Museum on Rustaveli Avenue.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

SololakiArt nouveau houses, courtyard balconies and wine bars below Mtatsminda; the best first base, steep in places.
Old Town (Kala)Baths, churches and the tourist restaurants around Shardeni Street; atmospheric, noisy at night, thin walls.
VeraLeafy, residential, café-led, between Rustaveli and Vake; quieter rooms, a fifteen-minute walk to the centre.
MarjanishviliLeft bank, restored Aghmashenebeli Avenue and the Fabrika complex; cheaper, younger, on the metro.

Stay in Sololaki or Vera for a first visit, close to Rustaveli and the old town without sleeping among its bars; the guesthouses around Freedom Square are central and loud.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Chronicle of Georgia, a set of sixteen 30-metre columns by Zurab Tsereteli above the Tbilisi Sea, unfinished and rarely visited.
  • ◦Stalin's underground printing house, a museum in a cellar reached by a well shaft, still run by the local communist party.
  • ◦The former Ministry of Highways in Saburtalo, a 1975 building of stacked concrete bridges, now a bank and viewable from outside.

Day trips

MtskhetaMarshrutka from Didube station, about 30 minutes — The old capital: Svetitskhoveli cathedral and Jvari monastery on the ridge above the river junction.
Kazbegi (Stepantsminda)Marshrutka or shared taxi from Didube up the Georgian Military Highway, about 3 hours — Gergeti Trinity church under a 5,000-metre peak; a very long day, better with a night in the village.
Sighnaghi and KakhetiMarshrutka from Samgori or a driver, about 2 hours — A walled hill town over the Alazani valley, Bodbe monastery, and family wineries pouring qvevri wine.

Good to know

Demonstrations gather on Rustaveli Avenue outside Parliament from time to time and are usually peaceful; check local news and give the crowds room.
