Santorini
You can be here in April for about €1,043, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in April: 19°C days, sea 18°C.
April to early June and late September to October keep the light and the swimming while the cruise-ship counts fall and the Fira to Oia path is walkable in the middle of the day. In July and August Oia's sunset is a queue and the caldera towns are full from morning to night.
Best months here: September, October, November. April is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Santorini is the rim of a drowned volcano with white villages along the cliff edge, and the view is exactly as advertised; the problem is that two million people a year come to look at it. It suits couples who want the caldera at sunrise from a terrace, people who will walk the rim path and eat in the villages away from Oia, and nobody looking for a beach holiday or a quiet one.
What you can do
- 01Walk the rim path from Fira through Firostefani and Imerovigli to Oia, about three hours, early.
- 02See Akrotiri, the Bronze Age town buried by the eruption, with its frescoes at the Fira museum.
- 03Take the caldera boat to Nea Kameni's crater and swim in the warm springs at Palea Kameni.
- 04Eat tomato fritters and fava at a taverna in Megalochori or Pyrgos, not on the cliff.
- 05Visit a winery for assyrtiko from basket-trained vines, then drive to the lighthouse at Akrotiri for dusk.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
A first visit should stay in Imerovigli or Firostefani for the view without Oia's crowds; the black-sand resorts at Perissa and Kamari are cheaper but a bus ride from the caldera.
Unusual things
- ◦Pyrgos's Venetian kasteli and the Profitis Ilias monastery above it, the highest point of the island.
- ◦Emporio's fortified medieval village with a maze of lanes inside the walls, ten minutes from Perissa.
- ◦The Tomato Industrial Museum at Vlychada, a 1945 canning factory kept with its machines and workers' testimonies.

Local transport
- Airport to city
- Bus, 20 min, €2; taxi €25
- Car needed?
- Recommended for most of what is worth seeing
- Getting around
- The airport is 15 minutes from Fira by taxi, and taxis are scarce; local buses fan out from Fira to every village but run late and fill in summer. A rented car or scooter is the practical answer, though the rim villages themselves are walked.

Good to know
The island sits on an active volcanic system and had a swarm of earthquakes in early 2025; check the current civil protection notices and hotel cancellation terms before booking.
