Why now

Good time in July: 26°C days, 20 rainy days.

There are two seasons, ski and hiking, with a dead interval in between when lifts close for maintenance and many mountain huts are shut; check lift schedules before booking a spring or late-autumn trip. Summer huts and the alpine roads are at their best when the school holidays are over.

Best months here: February, September, December. July is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Innsbruck is a university town of 130,000 people with a 2,000-metre mountain range starting at the end of its streets; the Nordkette cable car leaves from beside the old town and reaches the ridge in twenty minutes. Tyrol around it is a valley system of ski villages, dairy farms and via ferrata routes, and the region suits people who want to be outside every day and sleep somewhere with a decent Schnitzel.

What you can do

  1. 01Ride the Hungerburgbahn and Nordkette cable cars from Congress station to Hafelekar, then walk the ridge to the Seegrube.
  2. 02See the Golden Roof and Hofkirche, where Maximilian's bronze mourners stand around an empty tomb.
  3. 03Ski the Stubai glacier or the Axamer Lizum on a day lift pass, both under an hour by bus.
  4. 04Walk the Zirbenweg from Patscherkofel through old stone-pine forest with the Inn valley below.
  5. 05Visit Schloss Ambras above the town for the Habsburg cabinet of curiosities and the Spanish Hall.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

AltstadtThe arcaded old town by the Inn, a few streets deep; convenient, touristed, closest to the cable car.
WiltenAround the basilica and the station's south side; student cafés, cheaper rooms, Bergisel ski jump on the hill.
IglsA village on the plateau above town, reached by tram 6; quiet, with the Patscherkofel lift on the doorstep.
SeefeldA plateau resort 40 minutes by train, flat-ish cross-country skiing and lake walks; more for a longer, slower stay.

Stay in the Altstadt or Wilten for a first visit; Igls or the Stubai valley if the point is skiing or walking rather than the town.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Bergisel ski jump by Zaha Hadid, open to visitors with a funicular and a café at the top of the tower.
  • ◦Swarovski Kristallwelten in Wattens, a strange giant's head garden and grotto complex, 15 minutes by bus.
  • ◦The Hall in Tirol mint museum, where the first Thaler coins were struck, in a smaller and quieter old town than Innsbruck's.

Day trips

Hall in TirolTrain or bus, about 15 minutes — A medieval salt town with an intact old centre and almost no coaches.
Kufstein and the KaisergebirgeTrain, about an hour — Fortress above the Inn and the start of the Wilder Kaiser hiking trails.
ZillertalTrain to Jenbach then the narrow-gauge Zillertalbahn, about 1 hour 30 minutes — The ski and hiking valley of Mayrhofen; the Hintertux glacier is open for skiing most of the year.
