Winter brings the big North Shore swells and the humpback whales off Maui, plus jammed two-lane roads on contest days; summer is family season and the sea on the north coasts goes flat and swimmable. Spring and autumn are the quieter middle. Reservations are now the rule at the popular parks, so book Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay and Haleakalā sunrise before you fly.

The place
Two islands doing different jobs: Oʻahu has Honolulu, a real city with traffic, the hotel wall of Waikīkī and the North Shore's winter surf; Maui is quieter, resort-led on the south and west coasts, with Haleakalā above everything and the Hāna road wrapping the east. It suits people who get up early, like the sea more than the pool, and do not mind driving.
What you can do
- 01Walk the Diamond Head crater trail early, before the heat; non-residents need a timed entry slot booked online.
- 02Take TheBus to Pearl Harbor for the USS Arizona Memorial; the boat tickets are timed and go fast.
- 03Drive the Hāna Highway on Maui, stop at Waiʻānapanapa's black sand beach (reserve ahead), and turn back before dark.
- 04Watch sunrise from the Haleakalā summit with a park reservation, then coast down through upcountry Kula and Makawao.
- 05Eat a plate lunch or poke from a supermarket counter; Foodland and Tamura's are where Honolulu buys it.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
On Oʻahu, stay in Waikīkī for a first visit and accept the crowds, or in a Kailua rental with a car; on Maui, Kīhei is the practical base. West Maui's Kāʻanapali resorts have reopened, but Lahaina town itself is still rebuilding after the 2023 fire.

- ◦Byodo-In Temple in the Valley of the Temples at Kāneʻohe, a 1968 replica of the Uji temple set against the Koʻolau cliffs.
- ◦Kaʻena Point, Oʻahu's western tip, reached only on foot from either coast; Laysan albatross nest there and monk seals haul out.
- ◦Shangri La, Doris Duke's house of Islamic art at Black Point, visited on small guided tours booked through the Honolulu Museum of Art.
