Gothenburg
You can be here in October for about €779, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Shoulder season in October: 12°C days, 16 rainy days, fares below average.
The archipelago and the seafood restaurants on the coast run to a summer rhythm, with many places outside the city closing after the school holidays. Late spring and early autumn keep the boats running with fewer people on them; in high summer the islands' guest harbours fill with yachts.
Best months here: May, June, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Gothenburg is a port city that has turned its shipyards into a waterfront and kept its trams, its fish market and a certain working directness. It suits people who found Stockholm too polished, and it is the gateway to the west coast archipelago, where car-free islands sit half an hour from the tram terminus.
What you can do
- 01Take tram 11 to Saltholmen and a ferry to Vrångö or Styrsö in the southern archipelago for a swim off the rocks.
- 02Eat shrimp sandwiches or a fish soup at Feskekôrka, the reopened fish market hall on the canal.
- 03Walk Haga's wooden houses, then climb Skansen Kronan for the view over the roofs.
- 04See the Gothenburg Museum of Art on Götaplatsen for the Nordic collection, Zorn and Munch included.
- 05Spend an evening at Liseberg, the amusement park that is as much a city institution as a ride.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay around Haga, Linné or the Avenyn end of the centre; anything inside the moat is walkable to the station. The Gothia Towers by Liseberg is convenient but characterless.
Unusual things
- ◦Röda Sten Konsthall, a boiler house under the Älvsborg bridge turned contemporary art space.
- ◦The Volvo Museum at Arendal, a long way out at the harbour but the story of the city's other industry.
- ◦Slottsskogen park's Natural History Museum, with the Malm whale, a stuffed blue whale you could once sit inside.
