Cape Town
You can be here in October for about €1,000, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in October: 23°C days, sea 15°C.
The southern summer brings the beach weather but also the wind, the crowds and the highest rates; late summer and early autumn are calmer, with the sea at its warmest and the vineyards harvesting. Winter is wet but green, and whales arrive in the bay.
Best months here: January, February, November. October is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Cape Town is a small city pinned between a mountain and two oceans, with a wine region starting at its edge and the inequalities of South Africa visible on the drive in from the airport. It suits people who want hiking, beaches and good restaurants in the same day and can live with a car.
What you can do
- 01Hike Platteklip Gorge up Table Mountain early, then take the cable car down.
- 02Drive Chapman's Peak to Cape Point, stopping at Boulders Beach for the penguins.
- 03Taste wine in Constantia, the oldest estates, twenty minutes from the centre.
- 04Eat a Cape Malay curry or bobotie in Bo-Kaap, then coffee on Bree Street.
- 05Take the Robben Island ferry from the V&A Waterfront; book ahead, sailings depend on swell.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Gardens, Tamboerskloof or Sea Point for a first visit; Camps Bay is beautiful and isolated, the Waterfront is convenient and characterless.
Unusual things
- ◦The Woodstock street-art walk and the Saturday Neighbourgoods Market at the Old Biscuit Mill.
- ◦The Silvermine reservoir loop in Table Mountain National Park, a gentle hike with a swim at the end.
- ◦The District Six Museum, which documents the forced removals of the 1960s and 70s with former residents as guides.

Good to know
Hike in groups and not alone on quiet trails, and do not walk in the city centre or on the beaches after dark; car break-ins are common, so leave nothing visible.
