Vienna
You can be here in August for about €996, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in August: 28°C days, peak fares.
The concert and opera season runs roughly from autumn to early summer, so the winter is the time for music and the Christmas markets; the summer is quieter culturally but the Danube beaches and the Heurigen wine taverns in the outer districts are at their best. Advent and the ball season bring the heaviest hotel demand.
Best months here: June, July, September. August is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Vienna is an imperial capital run by a social-democratic city council: Habsburg palaces and Ringstrasse pomp, then municipal housing blocks, cheap trams and a coffeehouse culture that expects you to sit for two hours over one Melange. It suits people who like museums, music and long afternoons more than nightlife.
What you can do
- 01See the Kunsthistorisches Museum's Bruegel room, then cross Maria-Theresien-Platz to the MuseumsQuartier for Schiele at the Leopold.
- 02Buy a standing-room ticket at the Staatsoper on the day and watch an opera for the price of a coffee.
- 03Sit in Café Sperl or Café Prückel with a newspaper and a Melange; nobody will hurry you.
- 04Walk Schönbrunn's gardens up to the Gloriette early, before the coaches arrive at the palace.
- 05Take tram D to Nussdorf or the 38 to Grinzing and drink young wine at a Heuriger in the vineyards.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Neubau or Wieden for cafés and quick access to the centre; the 1st district is fine if you want to walk to the museums but pay for it. Avoid anything sold as 'near the airport'.
Unusual things
- ◦Karl-Marx-Hof in Heiligenstadt, a kilometre-long 1920s municipal housing block with a small museum on Red Vienna.
- ◦The Zentralfriedhof on tram 71, where Beethoven, Brahms and Schubert share a section and the Jugendstil church stands empty most days.
- ◦The Narrenturm behind the old general hospital, a round 18th-century asylum now holding a pathological-anatomical collection.
