Almaty
You can be here in January for about €831, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in January: -1°C days, snow season.
The mountains set the calendar: skiing at Shymbulak from roughly December to March, hiking and the lakes from June to September, and a short golden autumn in between when the city's apple orchards and parks turn. Weekends send half the city up the same valleys.
Best months here: June, September, November. January is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Almaty is a grid of tree-lined Soviet avenues sloping up toward the Tian Shan, with snow peaks visible from the bus stops and a ski resort forty minutes from the centre. Kazakhstan's former capital is easy-going, cheap to eat in and more Russian-speaking than the steppe cities; it suits walkers, skiers and people who like mountains without the machinery of an alpine resort.
What you can do
- 01Take the cable car from Medeu, the high-altitude skating rink, up to Shymbulak and its ridge chairlifts for the view.
- 02Walk Panfilov Park to the wooden Zenkov Cathedral, built without nails, then the Green Bazaar for kurt, horse sausage and honey.
- 03Ride the bus to Big Almaty Lake, a turquoise reservoir at 2,500 metres; the shore is off-limits, the views are not.
- 04Spend an evening on Panfilov Street and Dostyk Avenue: wine bars, Georgian restaurants, plov and shashlik.
- 05Visit the Central State Museum, then Kok-Tobe hill by cable car for the city laid out against the mountains.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the Golden Square or near Panfilov Street so the cafés and the bus to the mountains are on foot; the upper city is fine for a car but dull to walk from.
Unusual things
- ◦The Kasteev State Museum of Arts, with a large collection of Kazakh applied art and Soviet-era painting that few visitors reach.
- ◦Almaty's metro, only a handful of stations but with mosaic-decorated platforms in the Moscow tradition, cheap to ride end to end.
- ◦The apple orchards and dachas above the city on the Talgar side, where the wild ancestor of the domestic apple still grows.

Good to know
Altitude and sudden weather changes above Medeu catch out walkers in summer; carry layers and check the Shymbulak forecast before going high.
