Pantelleria
You can be here in August for about €940, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Prime time in August: 26°C days, dry, sea 26°C, peak fares.
June and September are the months when the sea is warm and the wind bearable; July and August bring the Italian summer set and full rentals. Outside late spring to early autumn most places close and flights thin out.
Best months here: July, September, October. August is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Pantelleria is a black volcanic island closer to Tunisia than to Sicily, with no sandy beaches, domed dammusi houses, capers, and a wind that forces the vines to grow in hollows. It suits people who want quiet, hot springs and a crater lake, and who will drive a small car on lava roads; it has nothing for those who need a beach or nightlife.
What you can do
- 01Swim in the Specchio di Venere, a turquoise crater lake with hot springs and mud at its edge.
- 02Sit in the Grotta di Benikulà natural sauna above Sibà, then soak in the hot spring pools on Gadir's harbour.
- 03Eat pesto pantesco, capers in everything, and ricotta-and-mint ravioli, then finish with a glass of Passito.
- 04Take a boat round the island for the Arco dell'Elefante and the sea caves; most of the coast is unreachable on foot.
- 05Walk up Montagna Grande through pine and holm oak, and see the Sesi, Bronze Age stone tombs near Mursia.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Rent a dammuso with a terrace on the east or south coast rather than a hotel in town; book early for summer and check how far the nearest swimming is.
Unusual things
- ◦The Giardino Pantesco, a circular dry-stone enclosure protecting a single citrus tree, restored by Donnafugata and open to visitors.
- ◦The Sesi of Mursia, Bronze Age burial mounds of black lava on the west coast beside the road.
- ◦Balata dei Turchi, a bay of lava slabs at the island's southern end, reached by a rough track and rarely busy.

Good to know
Wind can cancel boat trips and ferries for days, and sea entry is from rocks everywhere; bring water shoes and check flight schedules, which shrink out of season.
