New York
You can be here in October for about €1,387, 3 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in October: 20°C days, fares below average.
Late spring and early autumn give walkable weather without the August humidity; the weeks before Christmas fill Midtown with visitors and the museums with queues. Timed tickets for the big museums and the observation decks sell out days ahead in busy months, and Broadway is quiet on Mondays.
Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

New York is a walking city that happens to be vertical, and the trick is to pick a few neighbourhoods and cover them on foot rather than crossing Manhattan for landmarks. It suits people who like museums, food from everywhere and long days; it is loud, expensive and in a hurry, and the outer boroughs are where most of it actually lives.
What you can do
- 01Walk the High Line from Hudson Yards to the Whitney, then west Chelsea's galleries and the Meatpacking streets.
- 02Give the Met a full morning, then cross Central Park's Ramble to the Natural History museum.
- 03Cross the Brooklyn Bridge on foot toward Manhattan in the morning, starting from Dumbo's waterfront.
- 04Take the Staten Island Ferry at dusk, free, for the harbour and the Statue of Liberty without a queue.
- 05Eat through Queens on the 7 train: Jackson Heights for Nepali momos and Colombian arepas, Flushing for Chinese food.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay below 34th Street or in brownstone Brooklyn for neighbourhood life; Midtown is fine for a short business-like trip. Avoid anywhere that needs a taxi to reach a subway.
Unusual things
- ◦The Cloisters in Fort Tryon Park, the Met's medieval branch at the top of Manhattan, reached by the A train.
- ◦Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, Victorian hills and monuments with a view of the harbour and free walking.
- ◦The Tenement Museum on Orchard Street, apartment tours reconstructing immigrant households room by room.
