Why now

Prime time in November: 21°C days, dry, sea 18°C, fares below average.

The season runs all year: winter is mild and the city stays open, spring and autumn suit walking, and summer is hot but tempered by the sea. The August feria is a week of daytime drinking in the centre and Holy Week processions draw crowds; both need rooms booked ahead.

Best months here: June, September, November. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Málaga is a port city that spent decades as the airport for the Costa del Sol and has since become a destination of its own: Picasso's birthplace, a Moorish castle, a rebuilt centre of museums and a beach at the end of the pedestrian street. It suits people who want a city with the sea attached and who use the resorts to the west as day trips, not the reverse.

What you can do

  1. 01Climb the Gibralfaro for the view over the bullring and port, then walk down through the Alcazaba's gardens.
  2. 02See the Picasso Museum and his birthplace on Plaza de la Merced, then the Centre Pompidou's coloured cube on the quay.
  3. 03Eat espetos of sardines grilled over a boat of embers at a chiringuito on Pedregalejo beach, at lunch, not dinner.
  4. 04Drink sweet Málaga wine from the barrel at Antigua Casa de Guardia, then tapas at the Atarazanas market bars.
  5. 05Walk the Caminito del Rey, a booked walkway pinned to a gorge wall an hour north by train and bus.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Centro HistóricoPedestrian streets around Calle Larios and the cathedral; museums, bars, everything close, loud on weekend nights.
SohoBetween the centre and the port, a once run-down quarter now of murals, theatres and restaurants; central and a little calmer.
La MalaguetaThe city beach and the apartment blocks behind it; for a beach-first stay within a 15-minute walk of the centre.
Pedregalejo and El PaloFormer fishing villages east along the coast with chiringuitos and a promenade; a bus ride from the centre, local.

Stay in the Centro Histórico or Soho for a first visit, La Malagueta for the beach; the resorts west of the city, from Torremolinos to Marbella, are a different holiday.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Museo de Málaga in the old customs house, with nineteenth-century Málaga school paintings and a Phoenician collection.
  • ◦The English Cemetery on Avenida de Príes, the first Protestant cemetery in mainland Spain, with a garden of shells and cypresses.
  • ◦The Roman theatre below the Alcazaba, uncovered in the 1950s beneath a cultural centre that was then demolished to reveal it.

Day trips

RondaTrain or bus, about two hours — The gorge bridge, the old bullring and a walk down into the Tajo; arrive before the coaches.
Nerja and FrigilianaBus, about an hour and a quarter — The Balcón de Europa, the caves and a white hill village above; the beaches are pebbly and pleasant.
AntequeraBus, about an hour; train about 30 minutes — Bronze Age dolmens, a Moorish castle and the Lovers' Leap rock; the El Torcal karst is a short drive above.

Weekend nights in the centre are loud until late, and the coast west of Torremolinos is built up almost without a break to Marbella.
