Kutaisi
You can be here in August for about €451, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in August: 30°C days, peak fares.
The canyons and caves are open year-round and the cave temperature never changes, but boats in Martvili stop after heavy rain, which is most of spring. Autumn has the harvest, dry paths and clear views to the Caucasus; summer is humid and the coast at Batumi is full.
Best months here: April, September, October. August is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Kutaisi is a low-cost airport with an old Colchian capital attached: a river town of plane trees, a covered market and a rebuilt cathedral on the hill, surrounded by karst canyons, caves and medieval monasteries. It suits people who use it as a base for western Georgia rather than a destination, and who like guesthouse dinners more than hotels.
What you can do
- 01Visit Gelati Monastery, King David the Builder's academy with its mosaic and frescoes, then Motsameta on its cliff bend.
- 02Walk the Green Bazaar early for churchkhela, tkemali, Imeretian cheese and a hot khachapuri from the bakers.
- 03Take the boat and walking route through Prometheus Cave, a 1.4 km stretch of lit stalactite halls.
- 04Eat Megrelian food in a guesthouse: elarji, gebzhalia and kupati, with a jug of Tsolikouri from the family barrel.
- 05Climb to Bagrati Cathedral on Ukimerioni hill for the view over the Rioni and the old Jewish quarter.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in a guesthouse in the centre of Kutaisi for a first visit and eat where you sleep; hotels near the airport are for early flights only, with nothing around them.
Unusual things
- ◦Katskhi Pillar, a 40-metre limestone column near Chiatura with a chapel on top where a monk lived until recently; visitors stay below.
- ◦Chiatura, a manganese mining town in a gorge served by Soviet-era cable cars, some replaced, the old cabins still hanging.
- ◦The Vani archaeological museum on the site of a Colchian sanctuary, with gold jewellery from the tombs that stayed in Georgia.
