Seoul
You can be here in October for about €721, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in October: 19°C days, fares below average.
Autumn is the good window, with clear skies, foliage on Bukhansan and evening openings at the palaces; spring blossom along Yeouido draws heavy crowds, and the summer monsoon brings weeks of humid rain. Around the two big family holidays many restaurants and small shops close for days and intercity trains sell out.
Best months here: May, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Seoul is a city of granite hills and apartment blocks split by the Han River, with the Joseon palaces and hanok lanes on the north bank and Gangnam's towers on the south. It runs late and fast: 24-hour food, a café on every corner, a subway that reaches the mountain trails, and a sauna culture where a jjimjilbang counts as a night out. It suits people who like cities that never quite switch off and don't mind that much of the old is rebuilt.
What you can do
- 01Walk Gyeongbokgung after the changing of the guard, then drop through the Bukchon hanok lanes to Insadong's tea houses.
- 02Eat standing at Gwangjang Market: bindaetteok mung-bean pancakes, mayak gimbap and raw-beef yukhoe from the stalls in the centre aisle.
- 03Hike Bukhansan to Baegundae from the Bukhansanseong entrance, half a day on rock and steps, on a weekday if possible.
- 04Spend an evening in Euljiro: dried pollack and beer at Nogari Alley's outdoor tables, then a bar above a print shop.
- 05Rent a bicycle at Yeouido Hangang Park, ride the river path, and order fried chicken to the lawn at dusk.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Jongno around Insadong and Bukchon for the palaces and hanok guesthouses, or Myeongdong for airport buses and transit; Hongdae if you want the night, Gangnam only if work takes you there.

- ◦Jongmyo, the Joseon royal ancestral shrine, a long plain wooden hall seen by timed guided tour on most days.

Good to know
Spring brings days of yellow dust and fine particulates blown in from the west; check the air-quality readings if you have breathing problems.
