Queenstown
You can be here in February for about €1,879, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Prime time in February: 21°C days.
Winter is the ski season for Coronet Peak and the Remarkables, and the town is full; summer brings hiking, warm lake days and the longest queues. Autumn has the poplar colour in Arrowtown and the lowest crowds, and spring is unpredictable but quiet.
Best months here: January, February, June. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Queenstown is a small resort town on Lake Wakatipu under the Remarkables, built for skiing, bungy jumping and jet boats, and it does not pretend otherwise. It suits people who want mountains with infrastructure, or a base for Fiordland and Central Otago; anyone allergic to adventure-tour marketing should stay in Arrowtown or Glenorchy instead.
What you can do
- 01Ride the Skyline gondola to Bob's Peak, then walk down through the Tiki Trail forest.
- 02Hike the Ben Lomond track for the summit view, allowing six to eight hours return.
- 03Drive to Glenorchy along the lake, one of the country's most photographed roads, and walk the lagoon boardwalk.
- 04Take a day to Milford Sound by coach or small plane, or stay a night at Te Anau.
- 05Eat a Fergburger late at night, or the lamb at a Central Otago winery restaurant in Gibbston.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
The town centre for a first visit, Arrowtown for calm; book far ahead for the ski season and school holidays, when the whole area sells out.
Unusual things
- ◦The Arrowtown Chinese Settlement, restored huts of the gold-rush miners on the creek behind the village.
- ◦Moke Lake, a small lake in the hills west of town with a loop walk and camping, empty compared with Wakatipu.
- ◦The Onsen Hot Pools in Arthurs Point, private cedar tubs open to the Shotover gorge, booked in advance.

Good to know
Mountain weather changes fast, so register intentions for longer hikes and carry layers; alpine roads including the Crown Range and the Milford road can close for snow or avalanche risk.
