Jakarta
You can be here in November for about €507, 3 days, direct.
Why now
Shoulder season in November: 32°C days, 27 rainy days.
The dry months are the practical window, because heavy rain floods underpasses and turns a thirty-minute crossing into two hours. Around the main Muslim holiday the city empties as residents travel home, which makes traffic briefly wonderful and closes a large share of the small restaurants.
Best months here: January, February, March. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Jakarta does not perform for visitors: it is a working capital of ten million people where the interesting parts are food, markets and a colonial layer that the city has half kept and half built over. Distances are short on a map and long in practice, so a good day here is two neighbourhoods, not five. It rewards curiosity and patience, and frustrates anyone in a hurry.
What you can do
- 01Walk Kota Tua from Fatahillah Square to Sunda Kelapa, where wooden pinisi schooners still load timber by hand.
- 02Eat through Glodok: the market lanes of Petak Sembilan, the Jin De Yuan temple, coffee stalls in Gloria alley.
- 03Ride the MRT to Bundaran HI, then walk Jalan Sudirman on the Sunday car-free morning.
- 04See Istiqlal Mosque and the Catholic cathedral facing each other across a single street downtown.
- 05Order soto betawi or nasi uduk at a warung rather than a mall food court, and eat early.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Menteng or along the Thamrin–Sudirman axis within walking distance of an MRT station; anything far from a rail or busway corridor turns every outing into a traffic decision.
Unusual things
- ◦Museum Taman Prasasti, a Dutch colonial graveyard in Central Jakarta kept as a park of carved headstones.
- ◦The Jalan Surabaya antiques market in Menteng, a street of stalls selling brassware, vinyl and reproduction curios.
- ◦Setu Babakan in the far south, a Betawi cultural village around a lake where kerak telor is cooked over coals.

Good to know
Flooding is a genuine seasonal risk in the wet months, particularly in low-lying kampung areas and underpasses, and traffic can add hours to any journey; leave a wide margin for the airport and keep an eye on flood warnings.
