Why now
Good time in July: 27°C days, 31 rainy days, sea 28°C.
The dry season runs from the end of the monsoon to early spring; the beach shacks are rebuilt each autumn and taken down before the rains, so outside that window much of the coast is simply shut. The year-end holiday weeks bring the biggest crowds and parties, and the quiet weeks either side of them are the easy ones.
Best months here: January, November, December. July is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Goa is a state, not a beach: a strip of Konkan coast where four centuries of Portuguese rule left whitewashed churches, tiled villas and a taste for pork cooked in vinegar, and where north and south have grown into different places. The north is scooters, trance parties and restaurant villages behind the dunes; the south is slower and closes earlier. It suits people who will rent a scooter and treat the beaches as one part of the trip.
What you can do
- 01Eat a fish thali at lunch in Panjim, try a cashew feni, then walk the painted lanes of Fontainhas.
- 02See the Basilica of Bom Jesus and the Sé Cathedral at Old Goa early, before the coach tours arrive.
- 03Rent a scooter and ride the coast road north from Anjuna through Morjim and Ashwem to Arambol's sweet-water lake.
- 04Browse the in-season Saturday night market at Arpora or Anjuna's Wednesday flea market; both are crowded and negotiable.
- 05Spend a slow day in the south at Palolem or Agonda, where the bays are calmer and evenings end early.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
For a first visit stay between Anjuna, Vagator and Assagao in the north, or at Palolem in the south; Calangute and Baga are convenient but loud. Panjim suits people who want a town with a Portuguese quarter and day trips by scooter.
Unusual things
- ◦Divar Island, a short ferry from Old Goa: Portuguese villas, empty lanes and a hilltop church with almost no visitors.
- ◦Tambdi Surla, a 12th-century Kadamba temple in black basalt at the edge of the Bhagwan Mahavir sanctuary, the oldest surviving in Goa.
- ◦Goa Chitra in Benaulim, a private museum of farm tools and household objects collected by the artist Victor Hugo Gomes.

- Getting around
- A rented scooter is how Goa works; taxis are unmetered and dear by Indian standards, though the GoaMiles app helps. Dabolim airport is about 45 minutes from Panjim and the newer Mopa airport in the far north about an hour; Konkan Railway trains stop at Thivim and Madgaon.

Good to know
The monsoon from June to September closes most beach shacks and brings strong currents; drownings happen every year, so swim only where lifeguards are posted.
