Baku
You can be here in September for about €770, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Prime time in September: 26°C days.
Late spring and early autumn are the pleasant months; summer is hot and the Formula 1 weekend in the city centre closes streets and fills hotels. Novruz, the spring new year, brings closures and bonfires but also the best atmosphere on the boulevard.
Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Baku is an oil city that has been rich twice, once around 1900 and again now, and both booms are visible: Belle Époque mansions on the boulevard, Zaha Hadid's white curves at the Heydar Aliyev Center, and a walled medieval core, İçərişəhər, in between. The wind off the Caspian is constant and the city is more European in manner than its neighbours. It suits a long weekend of architecture, tea and a drive into a very different countryside.
What you can do
- 01Walk the Old City to the Maiden Tower and the Shirvanshahs' Palace, then out through the walls to Fountains Square.
- 02See the Heydar Aliyev Center inside and out; the carpet museum on the boulevard is better than it sounds.
- 03Ride the funicular to Highland Park for the Flame Towers and the Caspian at sunset.
- 04Eat piti in a clay pot or a plate of qutab in a lunch-only canteen near Nizami Street.
- 05Drive out to the Gobustan petroglyphs and the mud volcanoes on the same half-day.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in or just outside the Old City walls, or around Fountains Square; the seafront towers are comfortable but a taxi from the life of the place.
Unusual things
- ◦Yanar Dağ, a hillside northeast of the city where natural gas has burned continuously for decades.
- ◦The Ateshgah fire temple at Surakhani, built by Indian traders over a natural gas vent, with a small museum in the cells.
- ◦The Bibi-Heybat mosque area and the pumpjack oilfields beside it, the industrial landscape that paid for the boulevard.
