Why now
Prime time in June: 21°C days, dry.
The dry winter months are the game-viewing season, when animals gather at Etosha's waterholes and nights in the desert drop below freezing; the summer rains green the north and empty the camps. School holidays in South Africa fill the lodges regardless.
Best months here: April, May, September. June is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled". This page stands for a whole country, and its weather is measured at one point — -22.56°, 17.08°, near Windhoek. Somewhere else in Namibia the numbers will differ.
The place

Namibia is a country of long gravel roads between a few extraordinary places: the Sossusvlei dunes, the Skeleton Coast fog, Etosha's waterholes, Fish River Canyon. Windhoek is a tidy, German-flavoured capital that most people leave the morning after they land; the trip is the driving, and it suits people who like being far from anyone.
What you can do
- 01Climb Big Daddy or Dune 45 at Sossusvlei before sunrise and walk into Deadvlei's dead camelthorn trees.
- 02Sit at Etosha's Okaukuejo waterhole after dark and wait for the rhinos to come.
- 03Drive the coast road from Swakopmund to Cape Cross and its seal colony, fog permitting.
- 04Walk the Twyfelfontein rock engravings in Damaraland and look for desert-adapted elephants in the riverbeds.
- 05Stand on the rim of Fish River Canyon at Hobas at sunset, the second-largest canyon anywhere.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Spend one night in Windhoek then move: a lodge near Sesriem, Swakopmund, and a camp inside Etosha make the standard loop; book Etosha and Sesriem months ahead in the dry season.
Unusual things
- ◦Kolmanskop, a diamond-mining ghost town near Lüderitz where sand fills the abandoned houses.
- ◦The Quiver Tree Forest and Giant's Playground near Keetmanshoop, aloes and dolerite boulders in the south.
- ◦Spitzkoppe, granite peaks in the Erongo region with rock art, camping under arches and no light at night.

Good to know
Gravel-road rollovers are the main danger; drive slowly, never at night because of animals, and carry water.
