Catania
You can be here in August for about €620, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in August: 32°C days, dry, sea 29°C, peak fares.
Spring and autumn suit both the coast and the mountain: Etna's summit is snowbound in winter and its refuges are hot in August. The feast of Sant'Agata in winter fills the centre for three days; plan around it or for it.
Best months here: June, September, October. August is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Catania is a black-lava Baroque city rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, with Etna smoking above it and a fish market that gets going before dawn. It suits people who want Sicily's east coast as a base rather than a postcard; it is less polished than Palermo and prouder of it.
What you can do
- 01Walk through the Pescheria fish market behind Piazza Duomo early, then eat granita with a brioche for breakfast.
- 02Go up Etna from Rifugio Sapienza by cable car and 4x4 to the authorised craters near 2,900 metres, with a guide.
- 03See the Roman theatre on Via Vittorio Emanuele, wedged inside later houses, and the Benedictine monastery on the hill above.
- 04Eat pasta alla Norma in the city that named it, and a horse-meat sandwich from the grills on Via Plebiscito.
- 05Ride the Circumetnea railway around the volcano's flank through Paternò, Bronte and Randazzo, returning by mainline train from Giarre.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay within a few streets of Piazza Duomo or Via Etnea; the area around the central station is bleak, and Etna's refuges are for one night at most.
Unusual things
- ◦The Terme Achilliane, Roman baths beneath the cathedral square, entered from the Duomo's side door.
- ◦Castello Ursino, a Hohenstaufen fortress that stood on the shore until the 1669 lava flow pushed the sea half a kilometre away.
- ◦The Alcantara Gorge north of Etna, basalt columns and cold river water, better on a weekday morning.

- No — walkable or good public transport
- Getting around
- The centre is walkable and the single metro line is of limited use; Alibus runs from Fontanarossa airport to the station in about 20 minutes. A car makes sense only for Etna and the coast, not the city.

Good to know
Etna is an active volcano and the summit zone closes at short notice during eruptive phases; ash falls sometimes shut the airport for hours.
