Why now

Prime time in September: 26°C days, sea 24°C.

May, June and September give open ferries while the peninsula stays walkable, and a sea warm from June; in August the Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun are shoulder to shoulder at sunset. Winter is quiet and windy, with the bora shutting down boats.

Best months here: June, July, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Zadar is a Roman-and-Venetian town on a narrow peninsula that was bombed flat in 1943 and rebuilt without fuss, so Roman columns stand beside socialist-era blocks and a modern seafront organ. It suits people who want an old town without Dubrovnik's crowds and a base for the northern islands and the Velebit mountains.

What you can do

  1. 01Sit on the Sea Organ steps at dusk, then walk the Riva as the Greeting to the Sun lights up.
  2. 02See the Roman forum and St Donatus, the round 9th-century church, then climb the bell tower next door.
  3. 03Buy a bag of figs and cheese at the market by the Land Gate on any morning.
  4. 04Take the boat to Ugljan or Dugi Otok for Sakarun beach and Telašćica cliffs.
  5. 05Drink Maraschino in the town where Luxardo started making it, ideally at the end of a seafood dinner.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Old Town (Poluotok)The peninsula: every sight within ten minutes, car-free lanes, some late-night noise around Varoš.
Borik and DikloHotels, campsites and a pebble beach 3 km north; bus or a 30-minute seafront walk to the centre.
Petrčane and NinSmall resorts and a medieval island town up the coast; sandy shallows, family-oriented, a car helps.
Bibinje and SukošanMarina villages to the south with apartment rentals; close to the airport, quiet, a bus or bike ride to town.

A first visit should stay on the peninsula, ideally away from the Varoš bars; Borik and the coastal villages suit anyone driving or travelling with children.
