Santiago
You can be here in December for about €1,431, 3 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Prime time in December: 29°C days, dry.
Spring and autumn give clear mountain views; winter brings smog that hides the Andes from the city but opens the ski season at Valle Nevado and Portillo. Summer is hot and dry, and the city half-empties in the school holidays.
Best months here: March, October, November. December is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Santiago is an orderly, slightly reserved capital in a bowl of mountains, more useful as a base than as a destination in itself: the Andes are an hour east, the Pacific coast ninety minutes west, and wine valleys in between. It suits people who like a functioning city with a good metro and want the outdoors close.
What you can do
- 01Ride the funicular up Cerro San Cristóbal in the morning, when the Andes are still visible.
- 02Eat a seafood lunch at the Mercado Central, then walk through La Vega for the fruit stalls.
- 03Visit the Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos on the dictatorship years, then the Quinta Normal park.
- 04See Pablo Neruda's house La Chascona in Bellavista, then the bars along Pío Nono.
- 05Drink Chilean wine at a Maipo Valley estate such as Concha y Toro, 45 minutes from the centre.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Lastarria or Providencia for a first visit; the historic centre is fine by day but empties and gets rough after dark.
Unusual things
- ◦Cementerio General in Recoleta, with Salvador Allende's tomb and a memorial to the disappeared.
- ◦The Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino near the Plaza de Armas, small and well laid out.
- ◦Cajón del Maipo's Embalse El Yeso, a turquoise reservoir at 2,500 metres, about two hours by car.
