Menorca
You can be here in January for about €763, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Shoulder season in January: 15°C days, sea 16°C.
June and September are the months: warm sea, open beaches and space to park; in August the southern coves fill by ten and the island runs at capacity. From November to March most things close, though the Camí de Cavalls is at its best for walking.
Best months here: July, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Menorca is the quiet Balearic: a biosphere reserve with a Georgian port at one end, a Catalan old town at the other, hundreds of Bronze Age stone monuments in between and coves that still need a walk to reach. It suits families, walkers and people who found Mallorca too much; it has no nightlife to speak of and is proud of it.
What you can do
- 01Walk a stretch of the Camí de Cavalls, the path that circles the island, between Cala Galdana and Cala Macarella.
- 02Swim at the northern coves of Cavalleria and Pregonda, red sand and no buildings, when the south wind blows.
- 03See the Naveta des Tudons, a Bronze Age stone tomb shaped like an upturned boat, on the road to Ciutadella.
- 04Eat caldereta de llagosta, the lobster stew, at a Fornells harbour restaurant, and Mahón cheese from a farm.
- 05Take a boat round Mahón's harbour, past the Isla del Rey hospital and Georgian villas, then gin at the Xoriguer distillery.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Ciutadella or Mahón for a first visit and drive to the coves; the south-coast resort hotels suit families with small children.
Unusual things
- ◦Torre d'en Galmés, a talayotic settlement on a hill near Alaior with towers, a taula sanctuary and water cisterns.
- ◦The Isla del Rey in Mahón harbour, a naval hospital island with a Hauser & Wirth gallery in the restored wards.
- ◦The Fortress of La Mola at the harbour mouth, a nineteenth-century fort with a Vickers gun and bunkers, visited on foot.

- Getting around
- The airport is ten minutes from Mahón by bus; buses link the towns and, in summer, the main beaches, but a car is the way to the coves. Cycling on the flat interior roads is easy.

Good to know
The south wind makes the southern coves choppy and the tramuntana does the same in the north; pick the coast by the wind and ignore the postcards.
