Why now
Prime time in April: 25°C days.
Spring and autumn are the seasons; summer is hotter than the coast suggests, and winter is cold, wet and hard on unheated riads. The sacred music festival fills the city in late spring, and Ramadan quietens the daytime medina and pushes dinner late.
Best months here: May, October, November. April is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Fez is the medieval city Marrakech is sometimes taken for: a car-free medina of thousands of lanes that still works as a place where people live, tan leather, hammer copper and study. It suits people who want depth rather than polish and can accept that a day here means getting lost, being hustled a little, and walking downhill and then back up.
What you can do
- 01Walk down Talaa Kebira from Bab Boujloud to the Qarawiyyin quarter, stopping at the Bou Inania Madrasa on the way.
- 02See the Chouara tannery from a leather shop terrace with a sprig of mint, early, before the vats are in full sun.
- 03Climb to the Merinid Tombs above the medina for the late-afternoon view and the call to prayer rolling across it.
- 04Visit the Nejjarine funduq's museum of woodwork, then take tea on its roof over the carpenters' square.
- 05Order pastilla, the sweet-savoury pigeon pie the city claims as its own, and a bowl of bissara for breakfast.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in a riad in Fes el-Bali for a first visit, and choose one near Bab Boujloud, Batha or Place R'cif so a taxi can get close; ask the riad to arrange a porter. The Ville Nouvelle suits anyone who cannot face the lanes twice a day.
Unusual things
- ◦Ain Nokbi, the potters' quarter on the eastern edge of town where Fez blue ceramics are still thrown, glazed and fired.
- ◦Borj Nord, a 16th-century fort above the medina with a museum of arms and a view that rivals the Merinid Tombs.
- ◦Jnan Sbil, the restored royal gardens between the old and new medinas, a rare patch of shade and quiet.

Good to know
Unofficial guides gather at Bab Boujloud and around the tanneries; agree to nothing, and expect the leather shops above the tannery to want a purchase or a tip for the view.
