Verona
You can be here in September for about €723, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Prime time in September: 25°C days.
The Arena's opera season runs through the summer, which fills rooms and makes the evenings the reason to come; spring and autumn have the lake without the coaches. The wine fair in spring books out the city for a week.
Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Verona is a Roman and medieval city bent inside a loop of the Adige, with an intact arena still used for opera and a Juliet balcony that is best walked past. Lake Garda, a short train ride west, is a different holiday: lemon terraces at Limone, wind at Torbole, and a lakeside road that jams in summer.
What you can do
- 01Hear an opera in the Arena on a summer night from the unreserved stone steps, with a cushion.
- 02Walk from Piazza delle Erbe through Piazza dei Signori to the Scaliger tombs and up the Torre dei Lamberti.
- 03See Castelvecchio, Carlo Scarpa's remodelled museum of Veronese painting and sculpture, then cross the Ponte Scaligero.
- 04Take the train to Peschiera and the boat up Lake Garda to Sirmione's Roman villa and Scaliger castle.
- 05Drink Valpolicella and Amarone at a cellar in Fumane or Negrar, 20 minutes north, and eat risotto all'Amarone.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the Città Antica or Veronetta for the city; on the lake, choose Bardolino, Garda or Malcesine over Sirmione, which turns into a coach park by day.
Unusual things
- ◦The Giardino Giusti, a sixteenth-century garden with a hedge maze, cypress avenue and a viewpoint above the mascaron grotto.
- ◦The Roman theatre and archaeological museum above the Ponte Pietra, used for summer performances.
- ◦The San Zeno basilica's bronze doors and Mantegna altarpiece, a walk west of the Arena that most visitors skip.

Good to know
Opera nights and the wine fair fill every room, and Juliet's house is a queue for a balcony added in the 1930s.
