Porto
You can be here in September for about €654, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in September: 23°C days.
Late spring and September are the sweet spot, with warm afternoons and the river terraces open; winters are wet and short, and the Douro valley harvest in early autumn fills the valley's quintas. The São João festival in June is a single night of plastic hammers, sardines and fireworks; the city is booked solid around it.
Best months here: June, July, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Porto is granite, tiles and a river gorge, a working city that took to tourism late and still shows its trade: port lodges across the water in Gaia, warehouses on the Ribeira, tripe on the menu. It is smaller and steeper than Lisbon and easier to get the measure of in three days. It suits people who like grey light, heavy food and a drink at five.
What you can do
- 01Walk across the top deck of the Dom Luís I bridge to Gaia and taste port at one of the lodges.
- 02Eat a francesinha at Café Santiago or Brasão, then do not plan anything for the afternoon.
- 03See the azulejos in São Bento station and the gilded interior of São Francisco church.
- 04Take the historic tram 1 along the river to Foz and walk the Atlantic promenade to the Castelo do Queijo.
- 05Visit Livraria Lello only with a timed ticket, or skip it for the Casa da Música's guided tour.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Cedofeita, around Aliados or in Bonfim; the Ribeira is for looking at, not sleeping in, and Gaia is a bridge away from everything.
Unusual things
- ◦The Serralves museum's art-deco villa and park in the west of the city, with Álvaro Siza's museum building behind it.
- ◦The Mercado do Bolhão, rebuilt and reopened, still selling tripe, bacalhau and flowers on the ground floor.
- ◦Passeio Alegre garden in Foz, with its palm trees, ornate public toilets and a mini-golf course from the 1950s.

- Getting around
- Six metro lines with the violet line from the airport to Trindade in about 30 minutes; the centre is walkable but the hills from the river are steep and the funicular helps. Buses fill the gaps and the old trams are for pleasure.
