Copenhagen
You can be here in October for about €788, 3 days, direct.
Why now
Shoulder season in October: 13°C days, fares below average.
Late spring to early autumn is when the harbour baths, outdoor bars and Tivoli are open and the light lasts until eleven; winter is dark by four but the museums and restaurants carry it, and hotel demand drops. Restaurant bookings for the well-known kitchens need weeks of notice year-round.
Best months here: May, June, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Copenhagen is a low, brick, bicycle-first city where the harbour is clean enough to swim in and the design shops sell the chairs your grandparents' bank had. It is expensive and a little smug about it, and suits people who want to eat well, walk canals and cycle rather than tick off monuments.
What you can do
- 01Swim at Islands Brygge harbour bath, then walk over to Reffen's street-food sheds on Refshaleøen.
- 02Cycle the length of Nørrebrogade to Superkilen park and Assistens cemetery, where Andersen and Kierkegaard are buried.
- 03See Louisiana's sculpture park and Giacometti room on the coast, 35 minutes by train to Humlebæk.
- 04Take the harbour bus (line 991/992) from Nyhavn to the Opera and Refshaleøen instead of a canal tour.
- 05Eat smørrebrød at lunch in the Indre By and save the evening for a bakery-run natural-wine bar.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Vesterbro or Christianshavn for a first visit; the Indre By works but costs more for less character. Avoid Ørestad's tower hotels unless you have an early flight.
Unusual things
- ◦Cisternerne in Frederiksberg, a drained underground water reservoir used for a single art installation each year.
- ◦Thorvaldsens Museum by Christiansborg, the sculptor's own mausoleum-museum with painted ceilings and plaster casts.
- ◦Amager Strandpark and the metro to the beach, a 20-minute ride to a long artificial dune island.
