Why now

Prime time in November: 26°C days, dry, sea 23°C, fares below average.

The island is warm all year, which is the point; winter is the season for the south and spring for the north's wildflowers, while summer brings mainland Spanish families to the beaches. The Carnival in Santa Cruz, weeks of parades late in winter, fills the capital's rooms.

Best months here: September, October, November. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Tenerife is a volcano with an island around it: Teide's summit above the cloud, black-sand beaches, a green north of banana terraces and laurel forest, and a dry south of purpose-built resorts. It suits people who will drive between the two halves and walk; the resorts of Playa de las Américas are a separate holiday that has little to do with the island.

What you can do

  1. 01Book the Teide cable car and the summit permit weeks ahead, then drive up through the caldera's lava fields at dawn.
  2. 02Walk the laurel forest of Anaga on the Sendero de los Sentidos or from Cruz del Carmen to Chinamada's cave houses.
  3. 03See La Laguna's colonial streets and painted churches, then eat papas arrugadas with mojo in a guachinche in the north.
  4. 04Swim in the lava pools at Garachico or Bajamar, and off the black sand of Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz.
  5. 05Drive the Masca road for the village on its ridge, then see the Los Gigantes cliffs from a boat or the coast.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Puerto de la CruzThe old resort of the north: a working town with botanical gardens, a Manrique lido and black beaches; cloudier, more Canarian.
La LagunaThe university town above Santa Cruz; colonial mansions, student bars, a tram to the capital, and cool nights.
Santa CruzThe capital and port: the Calatrava concert hall, the Nuestra Señora de África market, the Carnival; few visitors stay, which is its appeal.
Costa Adeje and Los CristianosThe southern resort strip: guaranteed sun, hotels with pools, whale-watching boats, and little Canarian life.

Stay in Puerto de la Cruz or La Laguna for the island, Costa Adeje for guaranteed sun and a pool; the two halves are an hour apart by motorway.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Pyramids of Güímar, stepped stone terraces of disputed origin, with a museum built around Thor Heyerdahl's theories.
  • ◦The Cueva del Viento at Icod de los Vinos, a lava tube system visited by guided tour with helmets and torches.
  • ◦The Teno lighthouse road beyond Buenavista, a single-lane cliff road closed in bad weather, ending at a point with the west coast behind.

Day trips

Teide National ParkCar, about an hour and a half from either coast — The caldera's lava, the Roques de García loop, and the cable car to 3,555 metres; the summit itself needs a permit.
La GomeraFerry from Los Cristianos, about 50 minutes — Garajonay's laurel forest, terraced valleys and Valle Gran Rey; a very different island, better for two nights.
Anaga and TagananaCar or bus from La Laguna, about 40 minutes — Laurel-forest walks above the cloud, then down to Taganana and the black beach at Benijo for lunch.

Getting around
Two airports: the northern one is near La Laguna and Santa Cruz, the southern one serves the resorts, and each is about an hour from the other coast. TITSA buses are good between towns, but a car is needed for Teide, Anaga and Masca.

Good to know

Teide's summit permit sells out months ahead and the cable car stops in wind; the Masca gorge walk requires a booking and a head for heights.
