Why now

Shoulder season in August: 20°C days, 14 rainy days, peak fares.

Summer is the season for the fjord islands and the harbour saunas, and the city empties in July as Norwegians head south; winter brings Holmenkollen skiing on the T-bane and short, blue days. The shoulder months are the quietest and the cheapest for hotels.

Best months here: February, May, November. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Oslo is a fjord-side capital that has rebuilt its waterfront in a decade: the Opera you walk on, the Munch tower, the new National Museum, saunas floating in the harbour. Behind that it is a forested, hilly, expensive city where the metro takes you to cross-country ski trails in twenty minutes. It suits people who want museums and outdoors in equal measure and are prepared for the restaurant bills.

What you can do

  1. 01Walk up the Opera's marble roof, then cross to the Munch museum for the three versions of The Scream in rotation.
  2. 02See the new National Museum's Munch room and the Viking-era finds before the Bygdøy museums.
  3. 03Take the 30 tram or ferry to Bygdøy for the Fram polar ship and the Kon-Tiki raft.
  4. 04Ride line 1 of the T-bane to Frognerseteren and walk down through Holmenkollen past the ski jump.
  5. 05Book a harbour sauna at Oslo Badstuforening on Langkaia and swim in the fjord between rounds.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Sentrum and BjørvikaThe station, the Opera and the new waterfront blocks; convenient, new and slightly soulless.
GrünerløkkaThe former working-class quarter along the Akerselva river; bars, vintage shops, the best evenings.
Frogner and MajorstuenEmbassy villas, Vigeland's sculpture park and the western T-bane lines; calm and expensive.
Tjuvholmen and Aker BryggeThe redeveloped west harbour with the Astrup Fearnley museum; restaurants and prices to match.

Stay in Grünerløkka or around the centre for a first visit; Bjørvika if you want the museums on foot. Anything near Gardermoen airport is a wasted evening.

Unusual things

  • ◦Emanuel Vigeland's mausoleum in Slemdal, a windowless painted vault you enter in near-darkness while your eyes adjust; open Sundays.
  • ◦The Ekeberg sculpture park on the hill east of the centre, with the spot where Munch's Scream sky was seen.
  • ◦Bathing at Sørenga sjøbad, a floating pool and beach cut into the new Bjørvika district, free and open all summer.

Day trips

Hovedøya and the fjord islandsFerry B1 from Aker Brygge, about 10 minutes, on a normal transit ticket — Monastery ruins, beaches and pine woods; Gressholmen further out for quiet.
FredrikstadTrain, about an hour — The best-preserved fortress town in the Nordics, with a small ferry across the river to the old town.
DrøbakBus 500, about an hour — A wooden coastal town on the narrows where the Blücher was sunk; the Oscarsborg fortress is a short ferry away.
