Granada
You can be here in October for about €492, 3 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Prime time in October: 24°C days, fares below average.
Spring and autumn are the seasons, with snow on the Sierra Nevada above orange trees in spring; summer afternoons are very hot and the Alhambra is a furnace by two. Alhambra tickets sell out weeks ahead in every season, so the dates are set by what you can book.
Best months here: April, May, September. October is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Granada is the Alhambra and a city that lives in its shadow, with a Moorish hill quarter of carmens and cypress, a cave district where flamenco is home-grown, and bars that still serve a tapa with every drink. It suits people who book the Alhambra first and plan the rest around it, and who like a city with a student edge; it is cold in winter and hot in summer, with the sierra always in view.
What you can do
- 01Book the Alhambra's Nasrid Palaces for the earliest slot, and see the Generalife gardens in the same visit.
- 02Walk up through the Albaicín to the Mirador de San Nicolás for the Alhambra with the sierra behind at sunset.
- 03Eat tapas on Calle Navas or in the Realejo, where each drink brings a plate, then a pionono pastry from a bakery.
- 04See the Royal Chapel's tombs of the Catholic Monarchs, then the Baroque riot of the Cartuja monastery's sacristy.
- 05Hear flamenco at a zambra in a Sacromonte cave, and walk back down through the lit Albaicín lanes.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the Realejo or around Plaza Nueva for a first visit; the Albaicín is beautiful and a bad idea with wheeled luggage or a taxi habit.
Unusual things
- ◦The Bañuelo, an eleventh-century Arab bath on the Carrera del Darro, older than anything in the Alhambra.
- ◦The Monasterio de San Jerónimo, a Renaissance church with a painted interior and the tomb of the Gran Capitán, rarely crowded.
- ◦The Carmen de los Mártires garden beside the Alhambra car park, with peacocks, a lake and views over the Vega.

Good to know
Alhambra tickets are named, checked against ID and sell out; buy only from the official site, and do not trust anyone offering them near the entrance.
