Why now

Prime time in October: 23°C days, fares below average.

Easter processions and the summer feast days fill the towns and empty the beaches of parking; the harvest-season shoulder months are warm enough to swim and cool enough to walk the stairs of Ragusa. Winter is quiet, green and often closed on weekday afternoons.

Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The Val di Noto is the south-eastern corner of Sicily rebuilt in baroque after the 1693 earthquake: Ragusa Ibla on its rock, Modica in its gorge, Noto on a golden grid, Scicli under its cliffs. Comiso airport drops you among them, in farming country with dry-stone walls and carob trees running down to a sandy coast. It suits people who prefer small towns, churches and chocolate to anything active.

What you can do

  1. 01Walk down the stairs from Ragusa Superiore into Ibla, then sit in the Giardino Ibleo at the end of the town.
  2. 02Eat Modica's cold-worked chocolate at the Antica Dolceria Bonajuto, then climb to San Giorgio's 250 steps.
  3. 03Walk Noto's Corso Vittorio Emanuele in the late light, when the limestone turns the colour it is famous for.
  4. 04Swim at Marina di Ragusa or Sampieri, with the ruined Fornace Penna brickworks standing on the sand.
  5. 05Eat scacce, folded stuffed bread, and ravioli di ricotta with pork sauce at a trattoria in Scicli or Chiaramonte.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Ragusa IblaThe lower old town of palaces and small hotels, all steps; the atmospheric base, silent after dinner.
ModicaTwo towns stacked in a gorge, with the chocolate shops on Corso Umberto; a good alternative base with a station.
ScicliThe quieter baroque town used as Montalbano's Vigata, with beaches ten minutes away.
NotoThe showpiece town, crowded on the corso by day; stay a night for the evening.

Stay in Ragusa Ibla or Modica for a first visit and take a car; the seaside towns are for July and August only. Comiso itself is a pleasant working town, not a base.
