Alghero
You can be here in October for about €425, 3 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in October: 24°C days, sea 22°C, fares below average.
The town works from Easter to late October, a longer season than the resort coasts; June and September give the sea without the August crush. Winter is quiet but the old town stays open, which most of the Sardinian coast does not.
Best months here: June, July, September. October is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Alghero is a walled Catalan town on Sardinia's north-west coast, with its own dialect on the street signs, sea-facing bastions, and a coast of cliffs and coves running north to Capo Caccia. It suits people who want a small, walkable base with a proper old town and beaches within a bus ride; it is not the Costa Smeralda and does not want to be.
What you can do
- 01Walk the bastions at sunset from Torre Sulis to the port, then eat lobster alla catalana in an old town restaurant.
- 02Take the boat or the 654 steps of the Escala del Cabirol down to Neptune's Grotto at Capo Caccia.
- 03Cycle or bus to Le Bombarde and Lazzaretto beaches, ten minutes north, before the day-trippers arrive.
- 04See the Nuraghe Palmavera on the road to Porto Conte and the Anghelu Ruju necropolis of Neolithic rock tombs.
- 05Drink Torbato at the Sella & Mosca estate; in the cold months, eat sea urchin on bread by the port.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay inside the walls or within a five-minute walk of them; the Lido hotels suit beach-first families, and Porto Conte suits a quiet week with a car.
Unusual things
- ◦Le Prigionette reserve at Porto Conte, a forest of white Asinara donkeys and Giara horses, walked or cycled on marked tracks.
- ◦The Museo del Corallo in a Liberty villa, on the red coral that gives the Riviera del Corallo its name.
- ◦The Punta Giglio headland, with wartime gun emplacements and a restored barracks, walked from Porto Conte.
