Yerevan
You can be here in October for about €594, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in October: 20°C days, fares below average.
Autumn is the best moment: pomegranates and grapes in the markets, wine festivals in the villages, and clear mornings when Ararat actually shows. Summer evenings around the singing fountains are the city at its best, but the days pass 35 degrees; winter is cold, cheap and largely visitor-free.
Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Yerevan is a planned Soviet capital in pink tuff with an older country all around it: cafés under plane trees, a giant staircase full of contemporary art, brandy cellars, and Mount Ararat on the skyline from a neighbouring state. It suits people who like a small, safe, walkable city as a base for monasteries and gorges, and who can handle emotional weight at the Genocide memorial.
What you can do
- 01Climb the Cascade past the Cafesjian sculptures at dusk, then stay for the view of Ararat behind the opera.
- 02Spend a quiet morning at Tsitsernakaberd, the Genocide memorial and museum on the hill across the river.
- 03Buy dried fruit, sujukh and lavash at the GUM market, and eat khorovats at a tonir restaurant that night.
- 04Wander Kond, the last old quarter of crooked lanes and murals, before the developers finish with it.
- 05See the Matenadaran's illuminated manuscripts, then drink on Saryan Street, the wine-bar block.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Kentron for a first visit, ideally near the Opera or Saryan Street rather than on the traffic of Mashtots Avenue; the outer districts are cheap but need taxis for everything.
Unusual things
- ◦Levon's Divine Underground in Arinj, a maze of chambers one man dug under his house for over twenty years, shown by his widow.
- ◦The Sergei Parajanov Museum in a wooden house above the Hrazdan gorge, filled with the filmmaker's collages and props.
- ◦The Children's Railway in the Hrazdan gorge, a Soviet-era miniature line that still runs in summer through the park.

Good to know
Yerevan is calm, but many governments advise against travel near the borders with Azerbaijan; check current advice before planning routes in the southeast.
