Vilnius
You can be here in September for about €848, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in September: 21°C days.
Late spring and early autumn are the walking seasons, with the terraces open and the Užupis courtyards at their best; summer weekends bring the Kaziukas-style street fairs and open-air concerts. Winter is grey and short-dayed, but the Christmas tree on Cathedral Square and cheap hotels make it a reasonable bet.
Best months here: May, June, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Vilnius is a baroque city of churches and courtyards on hills above two rivers, with a self-declared artists' republic across a footbridge and a Soviet past kept visible in the old KGB building. It is smaller and greener than Riga, quieter than Tallinn, and suits people who like walking, cheap wine bars and a certain amount of melancholy.
What you can do
- 01Climb Gediminas Hill by the funicular or path for the old town's roofs, then walk down to Cathedral Square.
- 02Cross the Vilnia into Užupis, read its constitution on the wall, and drink in the courtyard cafés.
- 03Visit the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights in the former KGB headquarters, cells included.
- 04See St Anne's brick Gothic church and the Bernardine church next door, then walk the Bernardine gardens.
- 05Eat cepelinai and cold beetroot soup in a Lithuanian kitchen, then something lighter on Vilniaus gatvė.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the old town for a first visit or Užupis for character; the new town near the station is cheaper and fine, the suburbs are not worth the saving.
Unusual things

- ◦The MO Museum, a Libeskind-designed private collection of Lithuanian art from the Soviet decades onwards.
