Tel Aviv
You can be here in October for about €1,036, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in October: 28°C days, dry, sea 27°C, fares below average.
Spring and autumn have swimmable sea and walkable Jerusalem; summer is humid on the coast and the holidays cluster in autumn, when everything shuts for days at a time. Shabbat, from Friday afternoon to Saturday night, stops public transport and most of Jerusalem; Tel Aviv keeps going on its own terms.
Best months here: September, October, November. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Tel Aviv is a beach city built in a hurry in the 1930s, which is why it has more Bauhaus buildings than anywhere else and a habit of eating breakfast at eleven. Jerusalem, under an hour away, is its opposite in every respect: stone, ritual, argument, closed on the Sabbath. Seeing both is the point of the trip, and the contrast is the thing you remember.
What you can do
- 01Walk the White City's Bauhaus streets around Rothschild Boulevard and Dizengoff, then the beach promenade to Jaffa.
- 02Eat through Carmel Market and the Levinsky spice market, ending with a sabich on Frishman Street.
- 03Spend a full day in Jerusalem's Old City: the Western Wall, the Holy Sepulchre, the Mount of Olives at dawn.
- 04See the Israel Museum's Dead Sea Scrolls and the model of Second Temple Jerusalem.
- 05Watch Friday evening arrive in Jerusalem's Mahane Yehuda market, then the quiet as Shabbat begins.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay near Rothschild or in Neve Tzedek for a first visit, Jaffa for evenings; in Jerusalem, choose Nachlaot or the German Colony over hotels in the Old City itself.
Unusual things
- ◦Beit Guvrin, the Bell Caves and Sidonian burial caves in a national park an hour south of Tel Aviv, quarried by hand.
- ◦The Ramparts Walk on Jerusalem's Old City walls, from Jaffa Gate along the roofs of the quarters.
- ◦Ein Kerem, the village on Jerusalem's western edge with churches, springs and a slow lunch.
