Salalah
You can be here in November for about €591, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in November: 31°C days, dry, sea 28°C, fares below average.
The khareef monsoon turns the Dhofar hills green and misty for a few months and brings Gulf families in numbers; outside it the sea is clear and the hills are brown and quiet. Both are worth seeing, but they are different trips.
Best months here: January, February, December. November is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Salalah is the Oman that surprises: a coastal plain of coconut and banana groves backed by mountains that turn green in the monsoon, with frankincense trees and empty beaches in the other direction. It is slow, conservative and spread out, better for driving and swimming than for anything resembling a city.
What you can do
- 01Drive the coast east to Mirbat and Taqah, stopping at the Wadi Darbat waterfalls if the khareef has run.
- 02Walk the frankincense trees at Wadi Dawkah and the ruins of the Al-Baleed port by the museum.
- 03Swim at Mughsail beach and watch the blowholes at Marneef Cave when the sea is up.
- 04Buy frankincense and bukhoor in the Al-Husn souk near the Sultan's palace in the evening.
- 05Go west along the coastal road towards Fazayah, cliffs and beaches with nobody on them.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
A resort near Al-Baleed or in Mirbat if the beach is the point, a simple hotel near Al-Haffa if the souk and food are; expect little nightlife anywhere.
Unusual things
- ◦Sumhuram (Khor Rori), a pre-Islamic port that shipped frankincense to Rome, above a lagoon with flamingos.
- ◦The tomb of Job (Nabi Ayoub) in the hills above town, a small pilgrimage site with a view of the plain.
- ◦Wadi Shuwaymiyah, several hours east, a canyon of white cliffs and freshwater pools reached by 4x4.

Good to know
The khareef brings fog and slippery mountain roads, and beaches can have strong currents in the monsoon months; heed the red flags.
