Sri Lanka
You can be here in December for about €624, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in December: 30°C days, 22 rainy days, sea 29°C.
The island has two monsoons, so one coast is usually dry when the other is wet: the south and west are at their best from roughly December to April, the east from May to September. Poya full-moon days are public holidays each month, when alcohol sales stop and temples fill.
Best months here: January, February, December. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled". This page stands for a whole country, and its weather is measured at one point — 6.93°, 79.85°, near Colombo. Somewhere else in Sri Lanka the numbers will differ.
The place

Sri Lanka packs beaches, tea country, ruined cities and leopards into an island the size of Ireland, joined by slow trains and slower roads. Colombo itself is a working port city most people leave within a day, which is fair; the country suits travellers who accept that a hundred kilometres can take four hours and plan a loop rather than a list.
What you can do
- 01Ride the train from Kandy to Ella through tea estates, sitting on the left for the valleys; book reserved seats ahead.
- 02Climb Sigiriya's rock fortress early, then walk the frescoes and water gardens before the heat and coaches arrive.
- 03Walk Galle Fort's ramparts at dusk, Dutch churches and old villas inside, cricket on the maidan below.
- 04Take a morning safari in Yala or Wilpattu for leopards and elephants; Wilpattu is quieter and less driven.
- 05Eat a rice-and-curry lunch off a banana leaf, and hoppers with a fried egg for breakfast.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Spend one night in Colombo 7 at most, then base yourself in Galle Fort or the south coast, Kandy or Ella, and the Cultural Triangle around Sigiriya; avoid trying to see the east and south in the same week.
Unusual things
- ◦Jaffna in the Tamil north, reachable by train from Colombo, with the Nallur temple, Dutch fort and a very different cuisine.
- ◦Geoffrey Bawa's Lunuganga garden estate near Bentota, open for guided visits and one of the sources of tropical modernism.
- ◦The Dambana village of the Vedda people near Mahiyangana, visited by prior arrangement rather than as a stop.
