Chișinău
You can be here in December for about €548, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Shoulder season in December: 5°C days.
May to June and September to October are the months: the parks are in use, the vineyards are green or in harvest, and the wine cellars stay a constant 12 degrees underground. The national wine celebration in early autumn fills hotels for a weekend.
Best months here: May, June, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Chișinău is a low, green, Soviet-planned capital with a Romanian-speaking street life and very few visitors, which is its main quality. It suits people who like wide boulevards, markets that sell everything, wine from cellars that run for kilometres, and a trip where nothing is packaged.
What you can do
- 01Drive or take a tour into Cricova's underground wine city, 120 km of tunnels named like streets.
- 02Walk Ștefan cel Mare boulevard from the cathedral park to the Triumphal Arch and the government building.
- 03Shop at Piața Centrală for cheese, pickled everything and plăcinte pastries hot from the stall.
- 04Eat mămăligă with brânză and sour cream, and a zeamă chicken soup, in a Moldovan restaurant.
- 05Spend a morning at the Pushkin house museum and the shady Valea Morilor lake park.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Centru, within ten minutes of the cathedral park, for a first visit; the outer districts are safe but bland and the trolleybus is the only reason to be there.
Unusual things
- ◦Mileștii Mici, the world's largest wine collection by bottle count, toured by car through the tunnels.
- ◦Orheiul Vechi, a cave monastery cut into a limestone cliff above a bend of the Răut river.
- ◦The Memorial Complex 'Eternitate' and the Soviet-era Circus, a brutalist rotunda left decaying on the north side.

Good to know
Transnistria, the breakaway region east of the Dniester, is outside government control; most governments advise checking current advice before visiting Tiraspol, and travel insurance often excludes it.
