Bilbao
You can be here in October for about €976, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Good time in October: 23°C days, 14 rainy days, sea 19°C, fares below average.
Late spring and early autumn are the seasons; the Aste Nagusia festival in late summer brings nine days of crowds and closed streets, and winter is wet but the pintxo bars do not care. The coast's beaches are for June to September, and the surf at Mundaka is for autumn.
Best months here: July, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Bilbao is an industrial river city that rebuilt itself around a museum and kept its habits: pintxos eaten standing, a football club that fields only Basques, and an old town of seven streets. It suits people who like eating as the main event and who will take the metro or a bus to the coast; the Guggenheim is one afternoon, the rest is the point.
What you can do
- 01See the Guggenheim's Serra spirals and the building itself, then walk the riverside to the old town for lunch.
- 02Eat pintxos bar by bar around Plaza Nueva in the Casco Viejo, one per bar, with a txikito of wine.
- 03Take the metro to Getxo and cross the Vizcaya transporter bridge, then walk the cliff path towards Sopelana.
- 04Climb the 241 steps to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe on a booked slot, then eat grilled fish in Bermeo.
- 05Ride the Artxanda funicular for the view over the river bend, then the Fine Arts Museum, which many locals prefer.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the Casco Viejo or Abando for a first visit; the Casco is louder, Abando is closer to the Guggenheim. Getxo suits people who want the beach and a metro.
Unusual things
- ◦The Vizcaya transporter bridge at Portugalete, a gondola strung under an 1893 iron span, still carrying cars across the river.
- ◦The Azkuna Zentroa, a wine warehouse turned cultural centre with a rooftop pool whose glass floor shows over the atrium.
- ◦The Urdaibai estuary and Mundaka, a marshland biosphere reserve with a left-hand wave that surfers cross the world for.

Rain is a fact in every season and the coast can be cool in July; Gaztelugatxe requires a ticket booked in advance and closes in bad weather.
