Split
You can be here in May for about €685, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in May: 22°C days, 13 rainy days, sea 19°C.
Late May to June and September keep the ferries frequent while the cruise crowds inside the palace thin out, and the sea is warm from June. In high summer the old town is shoulder to shoulder by mid-morning and the islands book up; in winter many island restaurants close.
Best months here: June, September, October. May is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Split is a working port city that happens to have a Roman palace as its old town: people live inside Diocletian's walls, hang washing across its lanes and drink coffee on the Riva as if it were a village square. It suits travellers who want a base with ferries, a proper market and evenings that do not depend on visitors, and it is the sensible door to central Dalmatia's islands.
What you can do
- 01Walk Diocletian's Palace before eight, when the peristyle is empty and the cellars are open without a queue.
- 02Climb Marjan hill from Veli Varoš for the view over the harbour, then swim at Kašjuni below it.
- 03Take the morning catamaran to Hvar town or the ferry to Brač for Zlatni Rat.
- 04Eat grilled fish and blitva at a konoba in Varoš, then pašticada if it is on the menu.
- 05Spend a day in Trogir, a small Venetian island town 30 minutes away by bus or boat.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Varoš or just outside the palace walls for a first visit; rooms inside the palace are memorable but noisy, and Bačvice suits anyone who wants a beach walkable from the ferry.
Unusual things
- ◦Meštrović Gallery and the Kaštelet chapel on the Marjan road, with his wooden relief cycle of the life of Christ.
- ◦Salona, the ruined Roman capital of Dalmatia at Solin, reached by city bus and usually almost empty.
- ◦Klis fortress on the pass above the city, a medieval stronghold with a view down to the islands.

Summer bora and jugo winds can cancel catamaran sailings at short notice; check the Jadrolinija and Krilo boards the evening before an island crossing.
