Why now

Prime time in October: 19°C days, fares below average.

Ohrid has a summer festival season and a long August of local holidaymakers, so late spring and September give warm-enough water and space on the promenade. Skopje is a year-round city stop; much of the bazaar shuts by early evening, which shapes a short visit.

Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Skopje rebuilt itself twice: after the 1963 earthquake on Kenzo Tange's concrete plan, and again in the 2010s under a government that clad the centre in plaster columns and bronze horsemen. Across the Stone Bridge, the Ottoman bazaar is the real thing. Ohrid, three hours south-west, is why many people come: a lake town of Byzantine churches on a shore that is calm out of season and full of Balkan holidaymakers in it.

What you can do

  1. 01Cross the Stone Bridge into the Old Bazaar for kebapčinja, tavče gravče and the Ottoman hans around Kapan An.
  2. 02Climb Kale fortress for the Vardar valley, then the Museum of Contemporary Art beside it, built from post-earthquake donations.
  3. 03Take bus 60 to Matka Canyon and a boat up the gorge to Vrelo cave; go on a weekday.
  4. 04Walk Ohrid's old town from the harbour up to St John at Kaneo, Plaošnik and Samuel's Fortress before the heat.
  5. 05Take the boat from Ohrid to St Naum and drift over the springs in a rowed boat.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Debar Maalo (Skopje)Leafy grid of cafés, restaurants and kafanas west of the centre; the best base for evenings.
Old Bazaar (Skopje)Ottoman hans, mosques, goldsmiths and kebab grills; atmospheric by day, near-empty and dim after dark.
Centar (Skopje)Macedonia Square and the river, ringed by the 2014 statues and chain hotels; convenient, not where locals go.
Old town (Ohrid)Stone houses, church steps and lake views; stay here rather than in the hotel zones along the shore road.

In Skopje stay in Debar Maalo for evenings or Centar for convenience; in Ohrid stay inside the old town, not in the hotel blocks along the shore road.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Old Railway Station's clock, stopped at 5:17 by the 1963 earthquake; the surviving half of the building is now the City Museum.
  • ◦Janko Konstantinov's Central Post Office by the river, a concrete flower of the Tange-era rebuild, scarred by a 2013 fire.
  • ◦Vevčani, a village above Struga whose karst springs are walked on boardwalks and which declared itself a republic in the 1990s.

Day trips

Matka CanyonBus 60 from the centre, about 40 minutes — A dammed gorge with kayaks, boats to Vrelo cave and the small monastery of St Andrew; packed on summer weekends.
TetovoBus, about 45 minutes west — The Painted Mosque, its exterior covered in floral panels rather than tile, and the Arabati Baba Bektashi tekke.
Bay of Bones and GaličicaCar or bus down Ohrid's east shore, about 30 minutes — A reconstructed Bronze Age pile village on the water; the Galičica road above shows both Ohrid and Prespa lakes from one bend.

Getting around
Skopje's centre is walkable and taxis are cheap; the airport shuttle bus takes about 30 minutes and runs to flight times. Buses to Ohrid leave the main bus station several times a day and take about three hours; Ohrid airport has a few seasonal direct flights but no regular shuttle, so budget a taxi.

Ohrid trout is a protected species and fishing it is banned, yet it still appears on menus; order something else.
