Lisbon
You can be here in December for about €1,103, 3 days, direct.
Why now
Shoulder season in December: 15°C days, sea 16°C.
Spring and autumn give warm days without the August crowds, when Alfama and Belém fill and Cascais beaches spill over. The June saints' festivals turn the old quarters into street parties for a fortnight; book well ahead for that.
Best months here: June, July, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Lisbon is a city of hills, tiles and long light, where a 1930s tram still grinds up to the castle and the river is wider than most people expect. It has been discovered thoroughly in the last decade, so the centre now runs on short-term lets and tuk-tuks, but the outer neighbourhoods keep their grocers, tascas and pastelarias. It suits walkers with good shoes and people who like to eat early and cheaply.
What you can do
- 01Ride tram 28 from Martim Moniz early, before nine, then walk back down through Alfama to the river.
- 02Visit the Jerónimos monastery in Belém, then queue for pastéis de nata at the original bakery next door.
- 03Eat grilled sardines or a bifana at a tasca in Graça, lunch around one, no reservation.
- 04Take the elevator or the free stairs to the Carmo ruins, the roofless church left by the 1755 earthquake.
- 05Cross the Tagus by ferry from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas for fish restaurants and the view back.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Graça, Príncipe Real or around Estrela; Baixa is central but hollow, and Bairro Alto is loud until three most nights.
Unusual things
- ◦The Museu Nacional do Azulejo in an old convent in Xabregas, five centuries of tiles and a panoramic view of pre-earthquake Lisbon.
- ◦The Aqueduto das Águas Livres, walkable along the top of the 18th-century arches over Alcântara.
- ◦Casa Fernando Pessoa in Campo de Ourique, the poet's last flat, with his glasses and his horoscope charts.

Good to know
Pickpocketing on tram 28 and around Rossio is routine; keep bags in front and be wary of anyone offering drugs on Rua Augusta.
