Edinburgh
You can be here in October for about €1,258, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Shoulder season in October: 13°C days, 16 rainy days, fares below average.
August is the Fringe and the International Festival, when the population doubles, rooms triple and the city is at its best and worst; book months ahead or come another time. May, June and September have long light and reasonable crowds, and Hogmanay at New Year is its own booked-solid event.
Best months here: May, June, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Edinburgh is two cities on a set of volcanic hills: the medieval Old Town stacked along a ridge from the castle, and the Georgian New Town laid out in a grid below it, with a dormant volcano in the middle of the park. It is compact, windy, handsome in any weather and used to visitors without being entirely resigned to them. It suits walkers, readers and people who do not mind a hill before breakfast.
