Why now

Good time in April: 21°C days, sea 17°C.

March to May and October to early November are the walking months; in July and August the Acropolis closes in the afternoon heat on the worst days and the city empties to the islands. Around Orthodox Easter the centre is quiet and half the restaurants shut.

Best months here: September, October, November. April is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Athens is a concrete city of four million with a marble hill in the middle, and it takes a day to stop resenting the concrete and start liking the balconies, the ouzeries and the way every street ends in a view of the Acropolis. It suits people who want antiquity in the morning, a long lunch, and neighbourhoods that get better after dark, and who are not expecting a pretty town.

What you can do

  1. 01Go up the Acropolis at opening with a timed ticket, then spend the heat of the day in the Acropolis Museum.
  2. 02Walk from the Ancient Agora through Monastiraki to Kerameikos, the cemetery that tour groups skip.
  3. 03Eat souvlaki standing up in Monastiraki, then a proper lunch at a taverna in Psyrri or Petralona.
  4. 04Take the metro to Piraeus and a morning ferry to Aegina for pistachios and the Temple of Aphaia.
  5. 05Climb Lycabettus or Filopappou hill at sunset; the second is free and closer to the Parthenon.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Plaka and AnafiotikaThe old town under the Acropolis; pretty, touristic, quiet at night, whitewashed lanes at the top.
KoukakiResidential streets south of the Acropolis Museum; cafés, apartments, a short walk to the sites.
PsyrriBars, ouzeries and street art north of Monastiraki; loud until late, good for a weekend.
Kolonaki and ExarchiaKolonaki is polished and galleried; Exarchia next door is the student and anarchist quarter with the best bookshops and rebetiko bars.

A first visit should stay in Koukaki or Plaka for the sites, Psyrri for the nights; Omonia is central but rough after dark, and Syntagma's large hotels are convenient and characterless.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Athens First Cemetery in Mets, with Halepas's Sleeping Maiden and the tombs of the 19th-century city.
  • ◦The Stavros Niarchos Foundation park at Kallithea, Piano's library and opera house on a sloping green roof.

Day trips

Cape SounionKTEL bus from Pedion Areos, about 2 hours along the coast — Temple of Poseidon on a headland; go for the late afternoon and the last bus back.
DelphiBus, about 3 hours each way; tours are simpler — The oracle's sanctuary on Parnassus and a museum with the bronze Charioteer; a long day, better with a night.
HydraFast ferry from Piraeus, about 1.5 to 2 hours — A car-free harbour town of stone mansions; donkeys carry the luggage.

Good to know

Summer heatwaves regularly push the city past 40 degrees and the Acropolis closes in the afternoon on those days; check the ministry announcements and carry water.
