Reggio Calabria
You can be here in December for about €478, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Shoulder season in December: 16°C days, sea 18°C.
The Lungomare is at its best on summer evenings when the whole city walks it, but the bergamot groves and Aspromonte villages are easier in spring and autumn, and the Tropea coast is overrun in August. The Bronzes museum is quiet all year.
Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Reggio Calabria is a city rebuilt on a grid after the 1908 earthquake, facing Sicily across three kilometres of strait, with a seafront promenade and two Greek bronzes that justify the trip on their own. Behind it the Aspromonte rises to nearly two thousand metres. It is unpolished and honest, and it suits people who want the south without any tourist infrastructure, plus Sicily by ferry in twenty minutes.
What you can do
- 01See the Riace Bronzes at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, two Greek warriors pulled from the sea in 1972.
- 02Walk the Lungomare Falcomatà at dusk with Etna across the strait, then a gelato from Cesare.
- 03Take the hydrofoil to Messina, 20 to 30 minutes, and see the astronomical clock strike noon on the cathedral.
- 04Drive to Scilla and eat swordfish in Chianalea, the fishing quarter with houses standing in the water.
- 05Go up into the Aspromonte to Gerace or Pentedattilo, the emptied village under a five-fingered rock.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay on or near Corso Garibaldi within walking distance of the museum and the Lungomare; for a beach base use Scilla. Avoid the ferry-port zone at Villa San Giovanni, which is purely functional.
Unusual things
- ◦Pentedattilo, a Greek-speaking village abandoned after earthquakes and partly revived, under a rock shaped like a hand.
- ◦The bergamot groves of the Ionian coast around Brancaleone, the only place the citrus grows commercially.
- ◦The Greek-Calabrian villages of Bova and Roghudi Vecchio, where a dialect of Greek survives in the mountains.

Good to know
The Aspromonte back roads are slow and poorly signed, and some organised-crime issues exist inland; visitors are not targeted, but drive in daylight and keep to the villages.
