Why now

Good time in August: 28°C days, peak fares.

May to June and September to October are the walking months; August brings the film festival and full hotels, and winter fills the valley with smog that makes the city one of Europe's most polluted for days at a time.

Best months here: July, September, October. August is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Sarajevo is an Ottoman bazaar town with a Habsburg main street grafted onto it, in a valley whose hills still show the siege lines of the 1990s. It suits people who take history seriously and like their evenings simple: coffee poured from a džezva, ćevapi in a paper flatbread, a walk along the Miljacka.

What you can do

  1. 01Walk Baščaršija early, from Sebilj fountain to the Gazi Husrev-beg mosque and the covered Bezistan.
  2. 02Eat ćevapi at Željo or Ferhatović, with kajmak and onions, and nothing else.
  3. 03Visit the Tunnel of Hope at Butmir, the wartime lifeline under the airport runway.
  4. 04Ride the rebuilt Trebević cable car up to the abandoned Olympic bobsled track.
  5. 05Take the Sarajevo Meeting of Cultures line on Ferhadija and watch the architecture change mid-street.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

BaščaršijaThe Ottoman quarter: coppersmiths, mosques and cafés; small guesthouses, noisy in the evening, quiet by eleven.
Marijin DvorAustro-Hungarian and modern blocks around the Parliament and Holiday hotel; tram links, larger hotels.
BistrikSteep old lanes south of the river with the brewery and Bistrik station; views, stairs, family houses.
IlidžaSpa suburb near the airport with the Vrelo Bosne springs; calm, tram 3 to the centre in 40 minutes.

Stay in or just above Baščaršija for a first visit, close enough to walk everywhere; Marijin Dvor suits anyone who wants a larger hotel and tram access.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Museum of Crimes Against Humanity and Genocide on Ferhadija, small and unsparing.
  • ◦The Jewish Museum inside the Old Synagogue, with the story of the Sarajevo Haggadah kept at the National Museum.
  • ◦The Yellow Bastion (Žuta Tabija) above Kovači cemetery, where locals gather at sunset and during Ramadan for the cannon.

Day trips

MostarTrain, about 2 hours through the Neretva canyon — The rebuilt Old Bridge and Ottoman quarter; the train ride itself is the reason to go.
Travnik and JajceBus, 1.5 hours to Travnik, 2.5 to Jajce — Ottoman vizier town and a fortress town with a waterfall in its centre.
Vrelo BosneTram 3 to Ilidža, then a 3 km walk down the plane-tree avenue — Springs of the Bosna river in a park; picnic ground for the whole city on Sundays.

Good to know

Unexploded mines remain in rural areas around the city; stay on marked paths outside town and do not walk into abandoned buildings on the hills.
