Why now

Prime time in June: 29°C days, sea 24°C.

The Lungomare is at its best on summer evenings when the whole city walks it, but the bergamot groves and Aspromonte villages are easier in spring and autumn, and the Tropea coast is overrun in August. The Bronzes museum is quiet all year.

Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Reggio Calabria is a city rebuilt on a grid after the 1908 earthquake, facing Sicily across three kilometres of strait, with a seafront promenade and two Greek bronzes that justify the trip on their own. Behind it the Aspromonte rises to nearly two thousand metres. It is unpolished and honest, and it suits people who want the south without any tourist infrastructure, plus Sicily by ferry in twenty minutes.

What you can do

  1. 01See the Riace Bronzes at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, two Greek warriors pulled from the sea in 1972.
  2. 02Walk the Lungomare Falcomatà at dusk with Etna across the strait, then a gelato from Cesare.
  3. 03Take the hydrofoil to Messina, 20 to 30 minutes, and see the astronomical clock strike noon on the cathedral.
  4. 04Drive to Scilla and eat swordfish in Chianalea, the fishing quarter with houses standing in the water.
  5. 05Go up into the Aspromonte to Gerace or Pentedattilo, the emptied village under a five-fingered rock.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Centro and Corso GaribaldiThe long pedestrian corso parallel to the sea, with the museum, the cathedral and the hotels; where to stay.
LungomareThe seafront promenade and the Lido, a few hotels with strait views.
ScillaThe fishing village and castle rock 25 minutes north, the better base for a beach trip.
GambarieThe Aspromonte mountain resort above the city, a ski station in winter and a cool base for walking in summer.

Stay on or near Corso Garibaldi within walking distance of the museum and the Lungomare; for a beach base use Scilla. Avoid the ferry-port zone at Villa San Giovanni, which is purely functional.

Unusual things

  • ◦Pentedattilo, a Greek-speaking village abandoned after earthquakes and partly revived, under a rock shaped like a hand.
  • ◦The bergamot groves of the Ionian coast around Brancaleone, the only place the citrus grows commercially.
  • ◦The Greek-Calabrian villages of Bova and Roghudi Vecchio, where a dialect of Greek survives in the mountains.

Day trips

Messina and TaorminaHydrofoil 20 to 30 minutes to Messina, then train about 45 minutes to Taormina-Giardini — Sicily for a day: the Greek theatre with Etna behind it, and the return boat in the evening.
Scilla and the Costa ViolaTrain, about 25 minutes, or car — Ruffo castle, the Marina Grande beach, swordfish lunch in Chianalea.
GeraceCar, about 1 hour 30 minutes via the Ionian coast — A Norman cathedral town high above Locri, with the Greek site at Locri Epizefiri on the shore below.

Good to know

The Aspromonte back roads are slow and poorly signed, and some organised-crime issues exist inland; visitors are not targeted, but drive in daylight and keep to the villages.
