Tropea
You can be here in December for about €570, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Shoulder season in December: 16°C days, 14 rainy days, sea 18°C.
Tropea in August is a single queue from the old town to the sand; June and September have the same water, working restaurants and space on the beach. Outside late spring to early autumn most of the coast closes and the reason to come shifts inland to the Sila and Aspromonte.
Best months here: June, July, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Lamezia is the airport for a region most Italians visit and few foreigners do: Tropea on its rock above the Tyrrhenian, the Capo Vaticano coves, Pizzo's tartufo ice cream, and mountains inland that get snow. It suits people who want a southern beach holiday without the Amalfi crowds and who are willing to drive.
What you can do
- 01Swim below Tropea's old town and walk out to the Santa Maria dell'Isola sanctuary on its rock.
- 02Eat 'nduja from Spilinga on bread, red Tropea onions in every form, and a tartufo in Pizzo's main square.
- 03Drive the Capo Vaticano coast for coves like Grotticelle and the lighthouse viewpoint over the Aeolian Islands.
- 04Take a boat from Tropea's harbour along the sea caves, or a long day trip out to Stromboli.
- 05See the Riace Bronzes in Reggio Calabria's archaeological museum, two Greek warriors pulled from the sea in 1972.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Tropea's old town for a first visit, or above a cove at Capo Vaticano if the beach matters more than the evening; avoid the airport strip at Lamezia.
Unusual things
- ◦The Piedigrotta church at Pizzo, carved into the tufa by shipwrecked sailors and filled with folk statues.
- ◦Gerace, a hill town above the Ionian coast with a Norman cathedral and views to Sicily, about two hours' drive.
- ◦The Giganti della Sila, a grove of centuries-old pines on the Sila plateau managed by FAI, with cool air in August.

Good to know
The coast road in August is gridlocked and Tropea's beach car parks fill by mid-morning; Calabrian driving is assertive, so allow time.
